Biography


.....Bernat Vivancos (Spain, 1973) began his music studies with his father, an organist, and then continued with the famed Maitrise of Montserrat, where he studied piano, violin and organ with Father Ireneu Segarra. Singing, essential for all good musicians, has been of great importance in his career. Returning to Barcelona, Vivancos studied piano with Maria Canals and Raquel Millàs at the Ars Nova Music School, graduating with a First Degree from the Conservatory of Barcelona. He has given numerous concerts and has been awarded a number of international awards in Barcelona, Salerno and Athens, and has performed for radio and television broadcasting. At the same time he continued studying violin with Eva Graubin and performing with various orchestras. In 1997 he was nominated Chapel Master of the Manresa Cathedral and head organist of the Notre Dame of the Angels Sanctuary in Barcelona. Always interested in writing music, Vivancos studied composition with David Padrós.

.....In 1998, upon enrolling at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris, Vivancos made a decisive turn in his career development: he enrolled in the composition class taught by Guy Reibel, and then continued with Fréderic Durieux. He also studied with Laurent Cuniot, Luis Naon, Yan Geslin (New Technology), Marc-André Dalbavie (Orchestration, Prix 2002) and Alain Louvier (Analysis, Prix 2002). In 2003 he was awarded the Prix of Composition of the Conservatoire de Paris, and the DFS (Diplôme de Formation Supérieure) of Composition. During 2000/2001 he studied with Lasse Thoresen at the Norwegian State Academy of Music (Oslo), an encounter that significantly influenced his work in music. He was awarded a Young Leader Fellowship by the Sasakawa Foundation of Tokyo. During his time in Paris he was awarded fellowships from the Catalan Government, the Spanish Ministry of Culture, the AIE Foundation, the Fondation Agrupació Mútua, the AFFA and the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Foundation.

After winning several composition prizes in his country, Vivancos won numerous international prizes, some of the highlights being First Prize from the "Métamorphoses 2000" for Musique Acousmatique (Bruxelles), a unanimous first prize and a third prize at the Picardian Cathedral Festival 2001, second prize in the Concours des Jeunesses Musicales de Belgrad 1999, and second prize at the Jihlava Competition 2000 in the Czech Republic... In 2002 he won a “Honorable Mention” during the Festival Gaudeamus with his work “La ciutat dels àngels”, and was invited to present a new work in 2003. In 2003 he won the INAEM-Colegio de España Prize of de Spanish Ministery of Culture.

His music has been played by important groups and prestigious orchestras like Ensemble Court-Circuit, ASKO Ensemble, Holland Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philarmonique and Maîtrise de Radio France, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, Orquesta de la Radio Televisión Española, with prestigious conductors as Pierre-André Valade, Rumon Gamba, Arturo Tamayo, Pascal Rophé, Dominique My, Peter Hirsch, Roland Kluttig, Salvador Mas, Toni Ramon, Guillaume Bourgogne, Ketil Grøtting...

..... Bernat Vivancos teaches Composition and Orchestration at the ESMUC, Conservatory of Music of Catalonia (Barcelona). In 2005 he was nominated director of EMC (Music School Casp, Barcelona).

Since 2007 he is the Musical Director of Escolania de Montserrat.

.....As a composer Vivancos is open to all sorts of artistic endeavors. He attaches great importance to the musical idea itself and believes in inspiration, trying to achieve transcendence and musical spirituality, favoring harmony, sonic beauty, and remaining convinced of the limitless possibilities today’s music has to offer to our society.

.....The music of Bernat Vivancos has been performed in Germany, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Belgium, Canada, Colombia, Spain, France, Holland, Italy, Japan, Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Russia, Serbia, Sweden and Uzbekistan.
